“In 1929, Wall Street crashed bringing on the Great Depression of the 1930s when everyone, globally struggled financially. This was a shock after a decade of such exuberance and fun, so the film industry tried to cheer us up by creating a world of glamour that we could dream of escaping to. The stunning costumes worn by stars such as Rita Hayworth influenced our style as well as our wedding dresses.”

“Made to wear dresses started to appear in department stores in the UK, but the masses could not afford to buy them, choosing to wear their best dresses instead. Ivory and cream were the obvious choices but many wore pastel coloured dress and dyed their veils to match. Wallace Simpson wore a pale blue dress when she married The Duke of Windsor, which sparked a new fashion into the 1940s.”

“Brides wanted to feel feminine and glamorous like the film stars, which was also a stark contrast to the straight, box shapes from the decade before. Dresses were made from silks cut on the bias, which sat delicately over their curves, revealing a sensuous look. Most had long sleeves which were wider at the top, narrowing into a fitted wrist, again flattering the brides figure. Cap sleeves or even sleeveless dresses started to become popular, often worn with a fur stole or ostrich feather cape.”

“Veils were still worn long but now positioned at the top or back of the head revealing finger waves and often a rhinestone tiara, although some brides were still choosing wax flower headpieces which had been popular since Edwardian times. Ornate jewellery filled with diamonds and Art Deco styling were worn at the neck, as well as dress clips added to add interest to the simple, elegant dress. Many brides held delicate clutch bags, adorned in fine seed beads with a small strap at the back.”
