Dare I say it… as we get closer to winter we turn our thoughts to all those wintery nuptials which will be taking place, and it doesn’t get much more wintery than this beautiful and inspirational elopement winter wedding shoot set in Iceland. For brides wanting a different and breath-taking backdrop this is your place! It’s full of ethereal vibes, perfect for an elopement winter wedding with coloured bridal gowns, and the most amazing headwear. Here we catch up with Lina of Lina and Tom Photography who tells us all about this elopement winter wedding set in Iceland…
Elopement Winter Wedding in Iceland
“Iceland is a very special place to Tom and I, we’ve visited a number of times and in 2014 we got engaged under the northern lights there. Having returned a number of times we wanted to celebrate the beauty of the country our way. Iceland has the nickname ‘The Land of Ice and Fire’ so we decided to use this as a theme for the shoot. Despite being primarily wedding photographers, we love styled shoots as a way to unleash our creativity with a more fashion-led shoot, which particularly appeals to my nature as a former theatre director.”
“Over two days in January 2018, we visited a number of locations in southern Iceland, including Kleifarvatn, Stokkseyri, Skogafoss and Vik. We know it’s become very fashionable to shoot in Iceland in the last few years, and photographers will scramble over themselves to shoot there. Yet every time we see a wedding shoot or elopement in Iceland, they all seem to have that muted, dark tone to them. The way we see Iceland, the sky is so blue on a crisp winter’s day, the snow so bright and white, it’s all so vivid. We wanted to create a shoot in Iceland that reflected the vibrancy we see, combined with our love for an alternative wedding style.”
“We love to see couple’s do things their way, and we wanted to show it was very much ok to reject the white dress if you want to, the full suit, the nude bridal make-up. To not be afraid to be inspired by the things around you, the things you love. In almost ten years of wedding photography, we find the best weddings are those where the couple are true to themselves and bring in their own loves and passions. Then remember to have a bloody good time!”
“We’ve been a fan of Sharon Bowen-Dryden’s work for a few years now, and having worked with her pieces before, we knew it would give us the drama we needed. When Ultra Violet was announced as the Pantone colour of the year for 2018, our minds drifted to the stunning violet skirt she had, which needed its own suitcase! She also has a gorgeous range of separates that we were able to mix and match including the most delicate sea through lace crop top which our model bravely wore in around -15c! My Biba faux fur coat which I purchased around ten years ago seemed to complete the look.
“Up and coming alternative bridal queens Chotronette were an easy choice for the fire look – their dresses just sing for the confident bride. Originally we were going to try and pick up this specific dress second hand, as being in Romania we were sure they wouldn’t lend it to us, but we asked anyway and they were happy to collaborate which was so exciting for us. We pushed our luck and asked for the exquisite Fondant Fancy coat too which worked perfectly for the black sand beach – this would be an amazing look for a registry office wedding the day before a bigger affair.”
Rebecca Simm, from Love from Becky – “I took my inspiration from the dresses we used in the shoot by Sharon Bowen Dryden & Chotronette. The colours I chose to focus on were cool blue crystals & dark leaves for the ice theme and richer reds and maroons for the fire theme. I wanted both accessories to be different to each other, so I focused on leaves for the ice theme to create the deep v forehead shape which sat over the bohawk hairstyle boldly. Opposing this with the flower crown and bouquet for fire, I used all silk flowers to create height & drama in different red hues which also picked out the colours in the Chotronette gown vibrantly.
“We wanted couples to see that everything we create on a styled shoot is what we are able to recreate on a wedding day. Everything you see here is using the natural light available and we focussed on creating beautiful imagery of the couple themselves.”
“We wanted a real couple as we prefer to work as close as possible to creating real life work on our shoots, and Irena and Moon were absolute troopers in freezing temperatures. We definitely ended the shoot with two new friends from Iceland”
Hair and Make up
We decided to look for a make-up artist in Iceland and struggled to find anyone free and many recommended ones were working on Game of Thrones! So Rebecca from Love from Becky suggested the lovely Leah Stocker who jumped on board with her colleague Abbi. The girls didn’t actually see the outfits in person until the night before. We wanted a strong ice queen look for Ice and in particular a ‘Bohawk’ or ‘Fauxhawk’ style, a little reminiscent of the lead character in Vikings, with bold icy eye make-up. The Fire style was to be much looser and sexier. We shared some ideas with them and apart from a ‘no boho’ rule we let them do their thing, and they way surpassed our expectations!
