Romantic Bridgerton Inspired Wedding at Historic Dockyard, Kent

If you’ve not watched Bridgerton, where have you been? We were so excited when this styled shoot landed in our inbox, it’s romantic, regal and super dreamy! Set at Historic Dockyard Chatham, Kent, with vibrant florals, an array of purple hues and a purple bespoke wedding dress, it’s the perfect mix of modern vintage. If you loved the vibe of the series itself then you’re going to love this Bridgerton inspired wedding. Lily Jones Events was the creator of the shoot and we hear from her and the team on how it was created…

 

 

Inspiration

“A few months back I watched the Netflix series, Bridgerton and was inspired by the elaborate costumes, vibrant florals, locations and its message of inclusivity. I knew this was special and it was fuelling a fire to create, what would become my first wedding concept piece. I pitched my idea to one of the most amazing wedding planners, Lily Jones who helped me bring the concept to life. The day itself was full of creativity and fun and my concept would never have happened if it wasn’t for the phenomenal team that brought it together.” – Lauren Jackson, Ribbons & Wren

Styling – Lily Jones Events

“We love Bridgerton for its mix of Regency and modern elements, to create this for your wedding day, mix the two styles! This beautiful bespoke Regency gown by Felicity Westmacott was made modern with an amazing purple ombre dyed overskirt and train, giving it that extra element! Our Harpist, Gwenllian Llyr, played beautiful modern-day love songs which set a wonderful atmosphere, reminiscent of the Regency period but with a nod to modern-day – exactly like in the Bridgerton series.”

 

 

“When styling this Bridgerton Inspired Wedding shoot I wanted to combine the classic Regency era with a few modern elements, much like the Bridgerton series. The table featured vintage crockery and cutlery from A Touch of Vintage but matched with tinted purple cut glassware, very much a modern twist. We used lilac linen from Northfields Linen instead of the classic white and paired it with very traditional floral arrangements from Coco & Bloom. The whole style was simple yet elegant with a splash of colour.”

 

 

Venue

“The Historic Dockyard in Chatham has been the location for many blockbusters including Les Mis with Hugh Jackman and Call the Midwife. It just so happens that it was also one of the locations that the Netflix series Bridgerton was filmed so we knew we just had to create our shoot here. Starting in the Commissioner’s House, a beautiful Regency house, with its high ceilings and perfect opulent décor, we then moved to the amazing ropery and 3 slip hanger which is where all the boxing matches and training scenes were filmed for the Bridgerton series.”

“I found the Bridgerton series totally immersive because it’s such a visual delight! As a photographer, it’s the visuals that often strike me first. The shoot was rich in detail which meant I had plenty of scope for composing images to evoke a sense of the regency period and romantic theme. As a matchy-matchy kind of girl, I enjoyed the beautiful, thoughtful cohesion of all the elements! It’s this consistency in theme, colour and style, which ties the images together and creates an impactful gallery. A photographer has to preserve all the hard work and talent of the other suppliers, but also capture the spirit and sentiment. Lighting, posing, and camera settings were additionally important in creating images to tell the story of the day.”

 

The Bride

The Dress – Felicity Westmacott

“I created a modern take on the Regency fashions for our beautiful bridal model, just as Ellen Mirojnick did, designer for the show itself. I used modern fabrics, tulle, beaded lace and shantung but with period details like the empire line waist, square neckline and boned bodice to give a Regency flavour. I created period-accurate lace-up ‘stays’ (corset) and petticoat to give lift and shape to the bustline. The dress was designed with multiple layers, the main dress has an embroidered tulle bodice and asymmetric beaded lace skirt. Then lilac and pink dip-dyed tulle can be added and a dip-dye train piece, over the floral train of the main dress, so a bride can have different looks throughout the day. A lilac silk dupion ‘spencer jacket’ with hand appliqued beaded lace completed the ensemble. To recreate this look find a high waisted dress and add lilac accessories for a soft, pretty, finish.

 

Hair and Makeup – SJB Hair & Makeup

“My inspiration for hair and make-up for this Bridgerton inspired shoot was very much taken from Daphne styling on the show. Braiding was a huge feature of hairstyling. With two French braids for both the half up half down and meet updo, very much in keeping with Daphne’s style. Polished, youthful yet still glamourous. Make-up was minimal with a barely-there look. A huge step away from the 21st century and very much in keeping with the styling of the Bridgerton era when makeup options/products were not at the same levels as today. I went for light-reflecting, glowing skin, a barely-there look to the texture of the skin. Adding a pop of colour in a lavender tone on the eyes to compliment that absolutely incredible tie-dye inspired wedding dress finished with a natural soft pink tone to the lips and cheeks.”

 

The Details

Flowers – Coco & Bloom

“Coco & Bloom’s influence was taken from the grandeur of the Regency era and naturally our love for the Bridgerton series. We wanted to add a sense of romance and extravagance to the floristry with a nod to whimsical English flowers. Wisteria was the main focus for the shoot however due to its availability as a cut flower we looked to alternatives, in similar style and colour. The Language of Flowers really started late in the regency period but boomed in the Victorian age, therefore flowers had fewer meanings and were purchased more for the colour. As this was the case we moved ahead to the Victorian era choosing roses which indicated love – we used lots of these in all the florals. Research led us to select English garden style flowers such as scented lilac, garden spray roses, vintage and blousy purple and pink garden roses. Whilst lilac only has a very short season this floral palette could easily be adapted for any time of year using scented stocks and freesia which not only provide varying textures but also provide a glorious scent that fills the room.”

 

Cake – All Shapes and Slices

“The cake by All Shapes and Slices was a classic regency wedding cake featuring cascading handmade sugar purple wisteria flowers and white lace regency icing patterns.”

 

Stationery

“The stationery had to include wisteria, as it’s featured in the opening sequence of the show and outside the Bridgerton house. Soft purples and blues were my focus when designing the stationery, I researched the colour palette and created two stationery suites for the shoot, one slightly modern and the other more traditional. Combining florals into the flat lays was a must to help bring the aesthetic to life. I’m absolutely over the moon with the outcome and I hope it inspires couples to bring a modern-day twist to a regency affair.”

 

Jewellery – Varoshe Bespoke

“The rings for the Bridgerton inspired wedding just had to have a vintage twist, with delicate diamonds and intricate beading, we wanted them to exude classic elegance. The bride’s wedding ring has a scalloped edge, picking out the botanical shapes of the famous Bridgerton wisteria and adding subtle contrast to the plain band of the halo engagement ring. But why should the girls have all the fun?! Our groom’s wedding ring has a delicate beaded edge, perfect for adding just a touch of that vintage Bridgerton style!”
