Colourful brights to feast your eyes on today with this rustic barn wedding at Wick Farm Bath Somerset. Freya Steele Photography  coordinated the shoot and used real couple Emma and Jake who were due to tie the knot last year! “2020 was a tough time for not only suppliers in the wedding industry but also for couples. I was inspired to do this shoot because, I want to inspire couples by bringing back life and colour into the wedding industry, leaving couples and suppliers with a bit of hope and happiness for the future of weddings. Jake and Emma who were due to get married in California this year, weren’t able to due to Covid-19. This gave me the perfect opportunity to create a ‘Colour Pop’ inspired shoot. I wanted to capture some beautiful images for them to celebrate what would have been their wedding year and to capture some bright and cheerful content for some amazing suppliers during this tough time.”

“From a photographer’s perspective, the most important thing is being comfortable in front of each other, you want to be relaxed or enjoy your day and make memories. My approach is to blend into the background, I want my couples to feel like I am a friend at their wedding because you don’t want to spend your day feeling like the paparazzi is there. I am a very relaxed photographer, during couple portraits I won’t pose you in awkward position, I will simply just ask you to look at each other and say ‘Hey gorgeous’ or whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ears to make your laugh.”

The Venue

Venue: Wick Farm Bath

“The main areas featured were the Upper Barn, a 14th century Threshing Barn. It is beautifully rustic and decked with fairy lights to give that magical setting for your ceremony and wedding breakfast. It can hold 130 for a wedding breakfast and up to 200 evening guests. The Hay Barn was also featured, this is our quirky Boho outside ceremony area with hay bales as seats and a rustic arch to say your vows under, really popular in the summer.”

Styling

Stylist/Vintage Glass and Tableware: Kennedy Events

“Being a Wedding & event stylist and a collector of all things vintage and colourful I was excited to get involved on shaping the design of this shoot. When I first started working with Freya on this editorial, I knew my Mid century glass collection, would be a unique way of adding the pop of colour needed. Coloured vintage glass and candlelight add the perfect touch of evening romance to this occasion whilst the colour keeps it fun and casual. I find couples can be fearful of using colour and I hope this shoot inspires readers to dare to be different.”

Prop Hire: Rustic Rentals

“To create this look I used Vintage peacock chairs from the 1970’s, Moroccan vintage leather pouffe, Moroccan brass vintage table which work together and compliment each other creating a boho chill out area and backdrop. This met the brief set for Freya’s inspiration for a boho colour pop intimate wedding located in the rustic ceremony barn. These were accessorised with Moroccan colourful Kilim rugs adding some colour to the set up. Lanterns and accessories were added to create the final set up.”

Flowers: Young Blooms

“Couples can really go to town and use larger blooms like sunflowers to create real impact. Don’t worry about whether colours coordinate, I think the more contrasts you have the better the effect. If you’re looking to use this style then you’re probably going to opt for a larger style bouquet, this is not a delicate style of floristry. Bridesmaids bouquets could be paired down and maybe just use a single type of flower to contrast the bridal flowers. Overall this style is joy-filled and gorgeous, perfect to have if your looking for that party style celebration.”

Macrame: Knot Again Jill

“It was a great chance to showcase modern macramé with blending of styles and the focus on the colours. Using the outside barn which was so rustic looked great with the macramé tepee, and we added extra colour with tassels and macramé candle jars in our colour palette. Inside the main barn we used a more elegant mix of styles, with a peacock blue and green backdrop, some red and orange macramé placemats and some red macramé hearts. This was an amazing venue for a couple to set their own style, anything is possible, and this showcased that macramé pieces can be blended with a range of styles.”

Models

“After hearing our story, our incredibly thoughtful and talented friend Freya Steele offered to include us in one of her photoshoots to celebrate our love! While it was disappointing to see our plans change, we are so incredibly lucky to have such compassionate friends, a loving family, and above all, our health, in this difficult time for everyone. This year has been challenging for the whole world, and supporting each other has allowed our relationship to grow even stronger, and will mean that next year’s celebration of our nuptials will be even sweeter.”

Bridal

Dress: Carina B Couture

We are living in different times with weddings being celebrated in so many ‘different’ ways. Low key, cool, intimate weddings yet full of style. This was caught perfectly by Freya, the photographer who saw the clever use of colour dominate her shoot. Of course, her choice of E + W Blossom two piece was perfect for this. Festival and pretty in it’s design yet relaxed, just as E+W’s Piper dress exudes easy elegance and bohemian glamour. I was so glad to be part of this bright and happy day!”

Jewellery: Odesia May Jewellery

“The gorgeous low back dress called for a simple back necklace with a nod to the texture and colours of the overall theme. The look of natural playfulness was finished with hand sewn statement pearl drop earrings to bring focus back to the brides’ expression. The bright and bold colour palette was why I had to be involved in creating unique accessories for this photoshoot. For the hair comb, I combined striking coral, pink and burgundy pearls with the texture of golden leaves reflecting the florals and macrame backdrop of this stylish and arresting Boho look. Colour and texture is top for me when designing and I always want it to be the main feature at a wedding. Couples can create real emotion, in this case, a sense of joy, simply with a selection of colours and working around that. Everything popped and was so uplifting, a much needed feeling to capture this year.”

Wedding Details

Cake: Tasha’s Sugar Art

“I created a 3-tier naked wedding cake with vanilla bean buttercream also very colourful macarons. The cake was adored with fruit, fresh flowers and macarons. I choose five colours that would compliment the shoot when making the macarons. This look would work well if you are interested in a festival, farm or barn type wedding.”

Food: Fig and Flour

“Gone are the days of the beige canapé party food, Fig and Flour create a vibrant and visually striking alternative for those special occasions – perfect for a wedding like this one! They encourage your guests to mingle and to use food as a talking point which is great. Guests are also able to choose as much or as little as they wish and even go back for more! It’s sociable, casual dining at its best. The beauty of having a grazing table means not only are your guests better fed, it is also a far more efficient way of catering.”

Audio Guestbook

The Audio Guest Book is a Classic 1940s Bakelite telephone and ‘The’ alternative guest book to document your day using the most powerful communication medium: the spoken word. Guests simply pick up the phone, when they feel inclined to do so, and say, shout, laugh or sing whatever comes to mind. The recording is automatically saved, and the phone is then ready for the next caller. Our optional Virtual Audio Guest Book enables your friends and family to ‘call the phone’ from anywhere in the world via an 020 phone. Enabling everyone to be part of the celebrations from anywhere. The recording then arrives in a delicate spherical glass bottle with the audio messages on the USB inside the cork. The result is literally a message in a bottle that arrives in an engraved wooden memory box – the perfect time capsule providing you with memories that live forever.”

Videographer: Powerhouse Videos

“Couples often avoid booking autumn or winter weddings due to the British weather, but I feel some of the most colourful and innovative weddings have been shot during the colder months. I wanted to contrast the grey winter day and rain with the vibrancy and warmth of the celebration.”
